1 Introduction
- X-Arc is a program for archive handling, much similar from many
points of view to WinZip on Windows systems and Stuff-It for MacOS.
- X-Arc has nothing to spare with other programs of same purpose released since
ever: those programs provide only a graphic interface to archivers' commands,
often in a incomplete and not flexible way.
- X-Arc provides the user with an extremely intuitive interface to
the more often performed operations, while also offering many advanced options
to expert users.
- X-Arc is based on a modular concept, and allows to write modules to handle new
archive formats without having to change the main program.
- X-Arc allows to perform many operations using drag&drop from
within the program or with Workbench icons.
- X-Arc will scan an archive for install scripts and, if found, will install
an archive automatically, launching the standard installer command.
- X-Arc can work quietly. It can be called from an external program, sending
an archive to X-Arc and X-Arc will then de-archive this and, subject to a user command
or appplication request, will install the archive.
- X-Arc makes extensive use of bubble help, available nearly
everywere within its interface. This allows the user to quickly learn the
usage of every single gadget and to take full advantage of drag&drop features.
- X-Arc offers an advanced file recognition engine, based on both
file name and contents, which allows the user to display any file using a
suitable viewer.
- X-Arc can also import preference files from MIMEPrefs program by
VaporWare.
- X-Arc's interface is highly configurable and customizable.
- X-Arc can be fully controlled by keyboard only (many programmers seem
to forget about users who don't like mouse...)
- X-Arc uses MUI (a merit, IMHO).
